It goes without saying that car keys are important to most people. With cars becoming an extension of people’s lives, key safety and security are a necessity. Here are some tips to help you safeguard your keys.

First is security. Do you have a secure and discreet place to store your keys? According to most recent statistics, car keys are among the things that most thieves target in a victim’s house. To prevent such misfortune, owners are advised to store their car keys in a safe place. If you get in the habit of leaving them in the open you are asking for trouble. Avoid leaving your keys on the coffee table or on your bed stand. This makes it easy for robbers to steal them. You also run the risk of not remembering where you put them. Find a secure, out of sight cubby of some type and ALWAYS put your keys there when they are not in use.

Do You Have a Spare Car Key?

It is a wise idea to have a spare car key copy which you can use in a pinch.

When travelling, consider keeping your keys clamped to your belt with a keyring. Doing this ensures that you have your keys on your person at all times. If you choose to keep them in your pocket, ensure that your pockets don’t have holes. As much as possible, keep your keys hidden. Treat your keys as you would treat your wallet. For many of us, the money in our wallets is worth much less than our car is.  This means that you take them out only if you really have to.

Also, keep your keys safe from extreme temperature and rain. Hot or cold temperature and rain results in rusting and can damage your keys and or key fobs.  While this is not a major problem for traditional keys, it can have an effect on programmable keys.
