NVIDIA’s Huang Named One of World’s Best-Performing CEOs by Harvard Business Review

NVIDIA’s Jen-Hsun Huang has been named the 29th best-performing CEO in the world, in a new study in the November issue of Harvard Business Review.

HBR The top three CEOs in the study — which is based on an 80-20 weighting between the company’s financial performance and its performance on environmental, social and governance criteria — are Lars Rebien Sorensen, of Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk; John Chambers, of Cisco; and Pablo Isla, of Spanish retailer Inditex. Rounding out the top five are Elmar Degenhart, of German autoparts-maker Continental, and Martin Sorrell, of WPP, the UK consumer-services group.

“HBR’s ranking of CEOs is meant to be a measure of enduring success,” the publication states. “We track and analyze each CEO’s performance starting from day one of his or her tenure. Our goal is to create a list that gets beyond the most recent quarterly or even annual results and truly evaluates long-term performance.”

Huang ranks as the fourth-highest Information Technology CEO — behind Chambers, Seagate Technology’s Stephen Luczo (#5) and Canon’s Fujio Mitarai (#10). Five other IT CEOs also made the top 100 list, among them Terry Gou, of Hon Hai Precision Industry (#33) and Marc Benioff, of Salesforce.com (#46).

The study measures financial performance over each CEO’s tenure measured by country-adjusted total shareholder return, industry-adjusted total shareholder return and change in market capitalization adjusted for inflation. Environmental, social and governance criteria are ranked based on data from investment-research firm Sustainalytics.

NVIDIA to Ask ITC to Review Initial Determination on Samsung Patent Infringement Case

We said we would keep you informed of new developments in our cases with Samsung.

In the latest step of our efforts to protect NVIDIA’s intellectual property, an administrative law judge at the U.S. International Trade Commission ruled today that Samsung and Qualcomm did not violate U.S. law with respect to importing certain Samsung products into the U.S.

Judge Thomas Pender issued an initial determination that Samsung and Qualcomm didn’t infringe two NVIDIA patents, and that both did infringe a third patent but that this patent wasn’t valid.

This initial determination is one more step in a long legal process.

We now intend to ask the full commission (which is made up of six commissioners) to review this initial determination and to confirm the previous judgment of the U.S. Patent Office — that the third patent is valid. If they agree, the ITC would issue an order that would preclude Samsung from importing into the U.S. infringing Samsung mobile devices and smart TVs.

We are continuing this case by proceeding to the next step in the process because we believe our patents are valid and have been infringed.
